Cuando en 1992 fueron paralizadas las obras de la Central Electronuclear de Juraguá (Cienfuegos, Cuba), el ecosistema circundante empezó a crecer y a regenerarse.

Poco a poco la vegetación ganó terreno. Las aguas subterráneas cubrieron los espacios artificiales construidos. Las tierras circundantes fueron tomadas por campesinos, que también llevaron allí sus animales (vacas, cerdos, carneros), y hoy son incluso zonas donde viven (no siempre legalmente) personas que emigran desde el oriente del país en busca de mejores oportunidades económicas. Durante estas tres últimas décadas, todo un ecosistema marino y terrestre (de vida humana, animal, vegetal) ha poblado el lugar y se ha asentado en él, cubriendo la ruina en que se convertía la gran estructura industrial. Hoy es un entorno que se extiende sólidamente alrededor de esa edificación…

El sendero de los lagos azules es un proyecto artístico, comunitario y medioambiental que invita a explorar esta región y la conocida como Ciudad Nuclear. Este asentamiento fue diseñado originalmente para albergar a los constructores, ingenieros y otros trabajadores vinculados a la antigua central.

No obstante, la construcción se interrumpió a principios de los años 90, dejando el lugar como una especie de cápsula del tiempo, detenida y lentamente olvidada. En la actualidad, enfrenta numerosos problemas socioeconómicos debido a su aislamiento, así como desafíos medioambientales relacionados con la posible construcción de un confinatorio de desechos peligrosos. Sin embargo, esta información no parece ser completamente clara para sus habitantes.

El sendero de los lagos azules desea concienciar sobre el daño ecológico que podría sufrir el agua, el bosque y los suelos que rodean la ciudad, así como el impacto medioambiental que afectaría a la comunidad si finalmente se construye el vertedero.

Se trata de una invitación a trazar juntos un camino de (re)conocimiento y (re)lectura del lugar: a reflexionar sobre su pasado, la utopía social que le dio vida, y las relaciones actuales de los habitantes con su presente y, sobre todo, con su futuro y la preservación del medio circundante.

When the construction of the Juraguá Nuclear Power Plant (Cienfuegos, Cuba) was paralyzed in 1992, the surrounding ecosystem began to grow and regenerate.

 The vegetation gained ground, the groundwater covered the artificial spaces built. The surrounding lands were taken by farmers, who also carried their animals there (cows, pigs, rams), and today they are even the areas where people who migrate from the eastern part of the country live (not always legally) in search of better economic opportunities. During these last three decades, a whole marine and terrestrial ecosystem (of human, animal, plant life) has populated the place and settled in it, covering the ruin that the great industrial structure was becoming. Today it’s an environment that extends solidly around that construction…

​The path of the blue waters is an artistic, community and environmental project that proposes to approach this place and the Nuclear City. This settlement was built with the intention of being the home of the builders, engineers and other workers of the old plant.

The whole construction was interrupted during the early 90s, and the place became a sort of capsule of time, still and slow. Today it confronts many socio-economic issues, due to its isolation, and environmental ones, due to the possible construction of a hazardous waste dumpster. This information is not very clear to the inhabitants, though. 

This project wants to raise awareness about the ecological damage for the blue lakes around the city, the forest and the soils, and the environmental impact for the community in case the dumpster is finally built.

It’s an invitation to trace together a path of (re) knowledge and (re) reading of the place. To think about its past, about the social utopia that created it, and the current relations of the inhabitants with its present and, above all, with its future and the preservation of the environment.
