THE BAY, WE WERE THINKING HOW TO PERFORM A NUCLEAR ACTION

Laboratorio de creación artística en estrecha relación con la Ciudad Nuclear y el fallido proyecto de la central electronuclear de Juraguá, ubicada en Cienfuegos, Cuba.

La central electronuclear de Juraguá (CEN) fue considerada la obra industrial más ambiciosa de Fidel Castro. Su construcción simbolizaba la consolidación del sistema socialista en la isla. Sin embargo, aquel sueño atómico se convirtió en un fracaso. Las obras se paralizaron en 1992 y nunca se retomaron.

La Ciudad Nuclear comenzó a edificarse de forma paralela a la central a principios de los años ochenta. Estaba destinada a ser el hogar de los trabajadores: ingenieros, técnicos y demás personal que operarían las instalaciones. Sin embargo, su construcción también quedó inconclusa. Con el paso del tiempo, un velo de silencio, ocultamiento y abandono cubrió ambos proyectos.

La mayoría de los ingenieros y técnicos se trasladaron a otras zonas del país. Según los medios oficiales, hoy en día residen en la zona cerca de diez mil personas. Para muchos de ellos, la Ciudad Nuclear es solo un lugar de paso; llegan desde el oriente del país en busca de mejores oportunidades económicas. Para las nuevas generaciones, sin embargo, ha representado crecer en un pueblo fantasma.

Actualmente, la Ciudad Nuclear enfrenta graves problemas sociales. Entre ellos destacan el despoblamiento constante, la violencia de género, el machismo, la discriminación hacia la comunidad LGTBIQ+, así como la automarginación y la segregación.

A lo anterior se suma el hecho de que en 2015 el gobierno cubano anunció la construcción de un vertedero de residuos peligrosos en las instalaciones de la planta. Sin embargo, los habitantes de la Ciudad Nuclear y sus alrededores tienen poca información al respecto.

La intención de La bahía… es explorar la vida de los habitantes de la zona y las posibles repercusiones de la construcción del vertedero. Es un gesto, un movimiento, una aproximación personal, colectiva, documental, utópica como el propio proyecto industrial que dio origen a todo. Es un pretexto, el menos contingente que se pueda imaginar, para reflexionar sobre una Cuba del futuro. Es un proyecto en el que la investigación se expande hacia múltiples formatos: libro, concierto, pieza audiovisual, performance, recital de poesía, entre otros.

En La bahía…, lo documental se convierte en un ciclo donde se archivan fotografías, notas, videos, mensajes de texto y nombres. Todo es cuestionable, transformable, y existe únicamente un recuento regresivo. No se trata de cuánto somos capaces de construir como obra en el tiempo, sino de cuánto somos capaces de deconstruir a través de la experiencia.

The Juraguá Nuclear Power Plant (CEN) was Fidel Castro’s most ambitious industrial project. Its construction symbolized the consolidation of the socialist system on the island. However, that atomic dream turned into a failure. Construction was halted in 1992 and never resumed.

The Nuclear City began to be built parallel to the power plant in the early 1980s. It was intended to be home to the workers who would operate the facility. However, its construction was also left unfinished. Over time, a veil of silence and neglect shrouded both projects.

Most of the engineers and technicians moved to other areas of the country. According to the official media, today there are about ten thousand people living in the area. For many of them, the Nuclear City is just a place to pass through; they come from the east of the country in search of better economic opportunities. For the new generations, however, it has meant growing up in a ghost town.

Currently, the Nuclear City faces serious social problems. These include constant depopulation, gender violence, machismo, discrimination against the LGTBIQ+ community, as well as self-marginalization and segregation.

Added to the above is the fact that in 2015 the Cuban government announced the construction of a hazardous waste dumpster at the plant’s facilities. However, the inhabitants of the Nuclear City and its surroundings have little information about it.

The intention of The Bay… is to explore the lives of the inhabitants of the area. As well as the possible repercussions of the construction of the waste dumpster. It is a gesture, a movement, a personal, collective, documentary approach, as utopian as the industrial project that gave rise to it all. It is a pretext, the least contingent one imaginable, to reflect on a Cuba of the future. It is a project in which research expands into multiple formats: book, concert, audiovisual piece, performance, poetry recital, among others.

In La Bahía…, the documentary becomes a cycle where photographs, notes, videos, text messages and names are archived. Everything is questionable, transformable, and there is only a countdown. It is not about how much we are capable of constructing as a work in time, but how much we are capable of deconstructing through experience.
