THE POLITI-K: AREA FOR SELF-EMPLOYED WORKERS

Con la llegada del siglo XXI, la posibilidad de crear pequeños negocios en Cuba se convirtió en una realidad. Esto fue asumido como un primer paso hacia una futura apertura económica, que prometía no sólo una mayor remuneración monetaria, sino también nuevas motivaciones e intereses en torno al valor simbólico del trabajo.

Durante 2011 y 2012 trabajé como ayudante en la peluquería de un amigo. Su pequeño negocio formaba parte del grupo de los llamados «cuentapropistas» (autónomos) en Cuba. En esos años, hablé y escribí poco sobre teatro, pero aprendí mucho sobre cortes de pelo, coloración y tratamientos de alisado.

La Polit-K: área para trabajadores por cuenta propia es una performance que nace del proyecto La Política. Cinco documentos teatrales. Nuestro objetivo era intervenir un espacio no teatral y transformarlo en un «salón de belleza», donde se promocionaba un nuevo tipo de tinte para el cabello.

Bajo el lema: «Cambiar para que todo siga igual», los tintes POLI se ponen al alcance de los espectadores y voluntarios, mientras se exponen las ventajas de este producto ficticio. A través de esta acción, exploramos las tensiones entre cambio y continuidad, cuestionando cómo las aparentes transformaciones pueden enmascarar la persistencia de estructuras arraigadas.

With the arrival of the 21st century, the possibility of opening small businesses in Cuba became a reality. It was a first step towards a future economic opening, which promised not only higher monetary remuneration, but also new motivations and interests around the symbolic value of work.

During 2011 and 2012 I worked as an assistant in a friend’s hair salon. His business was part of the group of so-called «cuentapropistas» (self-employed) in Cuba. In those years, I spoke and did not write theater, but I learned a lot about haircuts, coloring and straightening treatments.

The Polit-K: area for self-employed workers is a performance born out of the project La Política. Five theatrical documents. Our goal was to intervene a non-theatrical space and transform it into a “beauty salon”, where a new type of hair dye was promoted.

Under the slogan: «Change so that everything stays the same», POLI hair dyes are made available to the spectators, while the advantages of this fictitious product are exposed. Through this action, we explore the tensions between change and continuity, questioning how apparent transformations can mask the persistence of entrenched structures.
